Doctor gave wrong medicine

Dear Uncle Agony,

My girlfriend caught a cold a few months ago and went to see doctor in some clinic. The doctor gave her some medicine. She took some and stopped taking after fully recovered. But today while I was checking the medicine given to her I found that the medicine is actually for curing cardiovascular diseases and has nothing to do with cold or common flu. Just for curiosity I checked another batch of medicine which she was given last year, and to my very surprise it was a kind of medicine which had already been recalled at year 2008. Now I am very furious about the doctor's negligence and very worried about the safety of the medicine.

My question here is:
1. What kind of legal action shall I take against the doctor/clinic? Shall I sue them or is there another way to deal with it?
2. What kind of evidence shall I collect/keep before I enrolling myself in the legal process?

May you please advise on them? Great thanks in advance!

That must really been a very doctor. Your girlfriend can sue him for negligence or write to him through a solicitors to threaten him with complaint to Singapore Medical Council unless he address your girl friend's claim. Keep all the unused medicine, the packaging, receipts and medical certificate from the clinic and bring them to your lawyer.

While it's indeed common for GPs to prescribe inappropriate medicine, especially to pregnant ladies, it does not necessary means *wrong* by reading online sources.

One good example is Viagra, now everybody knows what it's best for, but few knows it's initially developed for cardiovascular diseases.

And typically for cold, the active ingredient is paracetamol, which is like a wildcard for a lot common symptoms.
