The Great Equal Society
Confucianism, China and the 21st Century
by Jung-kyu Kim Date: 29 Oct 2013, Tuesday, 4pm – 5.30pm
Venue: Bookhaven, University Town, NUS
2 College Ave West, #01-07 (Stephen Riady Center), Singapore 138607
Just as the Singaporeans had a tough time defining "Asian values" during the 1990s, the proponents of the China model today disagree over what the term really encompasses.
In this refreshingly different talk, Jung-kyu Kim, co-author of The Great Equal Society: Confucianism, China and the 21st Century, elaborates how the China model should evolve in the future - not what it is, but what it ought to be - by leveraging the key insights of Confucianism.
If China becomes just another America (or even worse, three or four Americas combined), with its materialist values, military expansionism, and environmental degradation, then the world will have no reason to welcome its emergence. If, on the other hand, China becomes a model civilization for the world, achieving a healthy and prosperous society internally and projecting a magnanimous and intelligent leadership globally- in a way that America is currently failing to do - then the world will
surely laud and embrace its rise.
- Chapter 5, "The New China Model"
