越难拿offer的名校越不容易毕业,美国是,新加坡是吗

在中国念大学,基本所有学生都能按时毕业。但去美国读本科可不一样,拿到录取通知仅仅是入门,怎么适应美国大学的学习和生活,达到学校的要求按时毕业才是关键。

那么究竟美国大学的毕业率是多少呢?

网站College completion,专门统计每年全美国各大学的毕业率。据统计每年有总共1750万大学生正在就学,但其大学生毕业率是发达国家中最低的。

《纽约时报》曾发表了一篇名为《中国难题》文章,指出有5%的中国学生在大一课程开始前,就已从语言课程中退学。

有一位在读名校的留学生说:

他在读的工程专业,全美排名前五。 从大二进入专业课开始,每年都淘汰40%的人 。真正最后能毕业的不到20%。 而其余专业不合格的80%的人,眼看着毕不了业,都想法转校或者转专业 。

学术能力是影响毕业的最大原因。

芝加哥一所私立大学校董曾向美国父母作一个调查:你是希望自己的孩子在耶鲁抑郁还是在亚利桑那大学开心?

结果,75%的家长宁愿他们的孩子在耶鲁抑郁。因为他们觉得孩子可以慢慢平复情绪的困扰。而好大学、好专业才能有前景,牺牲快乐换取钱途,何乐而不为呢?

但是按这样的心态报考大学,然后在大学里遇到的学习问题就当然不可避免。据调查,中国学生在国外最容易遭受退学的专业中,理工科与经济商管成了重灾区。这些专业是热门专业,学术上要求会更加严格。

一般来说,学生的期末成绩和平均成绩如果未达到学校的最低要求(本科生GPA 2.0,研究生GPA 3.0),学校会先进行“留校学术观察”,给予学生一个学期的时间提高成绩,摆脱黑名单。但如果一学期结束,再一次上榜,学校就会发出退学通知。学生们的学籍信息系统里,就会写上:“Disqualified不合格”或者“Dismissed退学”。

除了课程难度,影响毕业的还有哪些因素呢?

学术诚实

美国大学对于抄袭是绝对“零容忍”,对于作业和考试要独立完成。在美国的课堂里,一般情况下小伙伴们一起讨论、写作业都是不被允许的。主要的学术诚信问题分为这三类:

抄袭、剽窃:抄袭是学术不端行为中最典型的例子,也是在高等教育中出现越来越多的问题。抄袭是指在学生在没有适当的来源确认的情况下,有或没有创作者的许可的情况下,故意或无意地,将他人的作品呈现为自己的作品。

作弊:作弊是指在考试或评估中试图获得或给予他人帮助而没有得到应有的承认。这包括提交不是自己的作业。

欺骗:例如,通过重新提交自己以前评估过的作业。

由哈佛大学的处理数据可以看出,国外大学对学术诚信问题相当重视,学校对于作弊行为,都保持着零容忍的态度,对于参与作弊的学生,学校会采取严厉的措施。

团队合作

美国大学课程几乎采取的是Teamwork、Groupwork的形式,这里需要培养团队合作、沟通能力,对于中国学生来说,是比较大的挑战。而且也会有组员之间的相互评分(Peer evaluation),评分计入总成绩。

课堂积极

在课堂上要踊跃提出自己的想法,参与课堂讨论,不能一味地逃避,中国学生要锻炼自己的能力。课堂表现占据成绩的一部分。快报君甚至见过比重占到20%的课堂表现。
